Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's ftrace (function tracing) subsystem. This vulnerability allows a local user to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by triggering a system crash. When an error occurs during tracing updates, the ftrace_bug() function attempts to read memory directly at an instruction pointer address without verifying its accessibility. If the address is invalid or unmapped, the kernel panics.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having a Low security impact because triggering the condition requires elevated system privileges to manipulate kernel tracing mechanisms or relies on existing kernel-level faults. In standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux deployments, access to tracing interfaces is restricted to administrative users. Furthermore, exploitation only leads to a kernel panic without compromising data confidentiality or system integrity.
