Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's VirtIO I2C driver. The driver improperly handles request completion notifications by assuming a callback arrives only after all queued transfer buffers have finished processing. When notifications occur prematurely, such as under shared interrupt conditions, the driver can release memory buffers that are still being accessed by the virtual device. This issue can lead to guest memory corruption, corrupted data transmission, or a Denial of Service (DoS) via a system crash.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having Low severity for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because VirtIO I2C adapters represent an uncommon virtual hardware configuration in typical cloud and enterprise deployments, limiting practical exposure. In environments where the driver is active, premature interrupt callbacks can cause race conditions during transfer completion, potentially causing guest instability or kernel crashes. Exploitation is constrained locally within the virtual machine and has no security impact on the underlying host system.
