Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel in the thermal/int340x_thermal driver. This issue occurs when the Global Device Data Vault (GDDV) returns a zero-length buffer, causing the kmemdup() function to return a ZERO_SIZE_PTR (0x10), leading to a NULL pointer dereference in data_vault_read(), potentially causing a kernel crash. The issue has been fixed by adding checks for ZERO_SIZE_PTR or NULL using the ZERO_OR_NULL_PTR() macro.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because it requires local access on systems equipped with specific Intel thermal hardware to trigger a denial of service. The issue manifests when reading the thermal data vault sysfs attribute on platforms whose ACPI firmware provides an empty data buffer, resulting in an invalid pointer dereference that crashes the operating system. Because exploitation cannot be executed remotely and relies on particular hardware firmware responses, typical enterprise server deployments remain largely unaffected.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
