Description
A vulnerability was found in the Linux kernel's NVMe driver, involving a race condition in multipath configurations with RDMA connections. The nvme_ns_head list that tracks NVMe namespaces is not properly synchronized with the SRCU lock in the nvme_mpath_revalidate_paths() function. This can cause a use-after-free situation when namespaces are removed from the list without proper synchronization, potentially leading to a NULL pointer dereference.
Statement
This vulnerability is considered moderate severity because it requires specific conditions to trigger, such as concurrent scan operations and the use of multipath configurations with NVMe over RDMA. While it can lead to a kernel panic due to a NULL pointer dereference, it is unlikely to be easily exploited under normal usage patterns. The issue only occurs when namespaces are simultaneously removed and accessed without proper synchronization, which is less common in typical workloads.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
