Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
KVM: VMX: Do all initialization before exposing /dev/kvm to userspace
Call kvm_init() only after all setup is complete, as kvm_init() exposes /dev/kvm to userspace and thus allows userspace to create VMs (and call other ioctls). E.g. KVM will encounter a NULL pointer when attempting to add a vCPU to the per-CPU loaded_vmcss_on_cpu list if userspace is able to create a VM before vmx_init() configures said list.

Statement
The bug was caused by exposing /dev/kvm to userspace before VMX initialization was fully completed. This meant that a local process could open /dev/kvm, create a VM, and invoke ioctls while key data structures (such as per-CPU VMCS lists) were still uninitialized.
A malicious local user with access to the KVM device could trigger this race by rapidly creating vCPUs during module load, leading to a NULL-pointer dereference inside the kernel. The impact is limited to denial of service (kernel crash).
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
To mitigate this issue, prevent module kvm-intel from being loaded. Please see https://access.redhat.com/solutions/41278 for how to blacklist a kernel module to prevent it from loading automatically.
