Description
A denial of service exists in the pass gfp argument to alloc_sk_msg() of the linux kernel, such that an attacker creating a specially crafted payload could result in damage to system availability.
Statement
A MODERATE severity denial of service vulnerability was found in the Linux kernel's skmsg (sockmap) subsystem. When data is received on a socket attached to a sockmap verdict program, sk_psock_verdict_recv() processes the packet under rcu_read_lock() protection, but alloc_sk_msg() may perform a sleeping memory allocation from this non-sleepable context. A local user with low privileges who can trigger sockmap verdict processing on an affected system could cause a kernel BUG ("sleeping function called from invalid context"), resulting in a denial of service affecting system availability.
In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, the kernel and kernel-rt components are affected and a fix is being pursued through the delegated maintenance process. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, 8, and 10, as well as Red Hat In-Vehicle OS, are not affected because the vulnerable code is not present in those products.
The CRITICAL severity in the upstream CVE record (CVSS 9.8, network attack vector) does not reflect the technical nature of this flaw: triggering it requires local access to the system and its impact is limited to availability, which is consistent with the NIST and CISA assessments (CVSS 5.5, local attack vector, low privileges required, availability-only impact).
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria, comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
