Description
This linux kernel vulnerability occurs in the s390/vfio-ap cryptographic device driver for the IBM S/390 platform. The issue arises within the vfio_ap_mdev_filter_matrix function, which is called whenever a new adapter or domain is assigned to a mediated device (mdev). Because the code failed to consistently filter the entire AP matrix under certain conditions, it creates an out-of-bounds write flaw. This memory corruption bug could potentially be exploited to compromise the system's confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Patched kernel versions resolve the issue by ensuring the driver properly filters the entire AP matrix during these assignment operations, preventing the unsafe out-of-bounds memory access.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Low severity because exploitation requires host administrative privileges on IBM Z (s390x) systems configuring VFIO cryptographic coprocessor passthrough. Triggering the improper filtering condition requires an uncommon operational sequence of unbinding and reassigning mediated device queues and domains on the virtualization host. Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases are not affected as the upstream commit introducing the defect was never included in enterprise kernel releases.
