Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's SMB client. A local user could trigger a use-after-free condition (accessing memory after it has been released) in the smb2_is_valid_oplock_break() function by referencing SMB sessions currently being terminated. This flaw primarily allows an attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) through a system crash.
Statement
This vulnerability is assessed as Low severity for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because exploitation requires an established CIFS network share and authenticated local execution, restricting the blast radius strictly to a kernel denial of service rather than code execution or privilege escalation. Systems that do not mount remote SMB file shares do not load the vulnerable client module and remain unaffected. Additionally, successfully triggering the race condition relies on precise timing during session teardown, making reliable exploitation unlikely in standard enterprise deployments.
