Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's cfg80211 wireless subsystem. When parsing an Aggregate MAC Service Data Unit (A-MSDU), insufficient validation of subframe headers can cause an out-of-bounds memory read. An attacker within wireless network range transmitting specially crafted frames could exploit this vulnerability to trigger a system crash, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS), or potentially expose sensitive memory contents.
Statement
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's cfg80211 wireless subsystem, affecting the kernel and kernel-rt packages in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and 9, and it was rated Moderate by Red Hat Product Security. When parsing an Aggregate MAC Service Data Unit (A-MSDU), insufficient validation of subframe headers can cause an out-of-bounds memory read. An attacker within wireless network range of an affected system who transmits specially crafted frames could exploit this flaw to trigger a system crash, resulting in a denial of service, or potentially expose sensitive memory contents. Red Hat's Moderate impact rating is lower than the Important severity implied by the NIST and CVE.org CVSS 3.1 base scores (7.1 and 8.1) because exploitation requires an attacker to be within range of the target's wireless network and relies on processing A-MSDU-aggregated frames through the affected cfg80211 parsing path, which limits exposure for typical installations. Fixes are being pursued for the affected Red Hat Enterprise Linux release streams through the kernel and real-time kernel components.
CVSS score applicability
