Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's parallel port device (ppdev) driver. When registering a device, the driver fails to properly validate the return value of an identifier allocation request. A local attacker could exploit this vulnerability to force the kernel to use an invalid index, potentially leading to a system crash and resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS).
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having a Low severity impact because exploitation requires local access and relies on the parallel port character device interface, which is rarely utilized in modern enterprise environments. An unprivileged local user interacting with the parallel port device registration path could trigger an unhandled index allocation error, leading to a kernel crash and denial of service. The impact is strictly confined to system availability, with no compromise to data confidentiality or integrity.
