Description

A flaw was found in the NPM package braces. It fails to limit the number of characters it can handle, which could lead to memory exhaustion. In lib/parse.js, if a malicious user sends "imbalanced braces" as input, the parsing will enter a loop, causing the program to start allocating heap memory without freeing it at any moment of the loop. Eventually, the JavaScript heap limit is reached, and the program will crash.

Statement

Moderate impact: In Red Hat products and services that include the vulnerable NPM package braces, a remote, unauthenticated attacker can provide crafted input containing imbalanced braces. The parser may enter an unbounded loop and allocate heap memory without freeing it, exhausting the JavaScript heap and crashing the application, causing a denial of service. The CVSS 3.1 score is 7.5 (Important), with a network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges or user interaction, and high availability impact; Red Hat's score matches the CVE.org score. The current affects cover multiple Red Hat products and services and community projects. Some current product streams are marked not affected or won't fix; the record does not provide a technical justification for those distinctions.

CVSS score applicability
