Description

A vulnerability was found in the Linux kernel's toshiba_acpi driver which does not terminate with an empty entry, something necessary to use toshiba_dmi_quircks[] together with teh standard DMI matching functions. This results in an array out-of-bounds access and could lead to memory corruption or crashes.

Statement

A low impact out-of-bounds read was found in the Linux kernel toshiba_acpi driver. The toshiba_dmi_quirks[] array used by the driver was missing the terminating empty entry required when it is used with the standard DMI matching functions, so an out-of-bounds access occurs every time the quirk list is processed, which can result in kernel instability or a crash and therefore a denial of service. Red Hat rates this flaw as low impact because the out-of-bounds access is triggered during driver quirk processing rather than by attacker-controlled input and the impact is limited to availability, with no confidentiality or integrity impact; this is a significant difference from the NIST (7.8, important) and CVE.org (7.1, important) scores, which assume a broader local attack scenario. The issue was introduced upstream in Linux kernel 6.1 and is not present in the kernel versions shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, so Red Hat Enterprise Linux kernel and kernel-rt are not affected. Only the Fedora community kernel is affected, with the fix handled through the Fedora community update process.
