Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's WireGuard component. This vulnerability can lead to a Denial of Service (DoS) on hardware architectures that enforce strict memory alignment. When inserting IPv6 addresses into the allowed IP routing table, the driver performs unaligned memory reads. A user configuring network addresses on affected architectures can trigger kernel warnings or faults, potentially causing system instability.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated with a Low severity impact for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because exploitation requires elevated administrative privileges to manage network configurations and primarily affects specific hardware architectures that enforce strict memory alignment. Standard enterprise architectures supported by Red Hat generally handle unaligned memory accesses without system crashes. Furthermore, WireGuard virtual interfaces are not configured by default, restricting exposure exclusively to environments where WireGuard peer routing is actively configured by an administrator.
