Description

nvme-pci in linux kernel does not call nvme_unmap_data for the same instances of nvme_map_data, which can lead to incorrect dereferencing.

Statement

A moderate-impact flaw was found in the Linux kernel NVMe PCI driver (nvme-pci) as shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 and Fedora. nvme_map_data() is only called when a request has physical segments, but nvme_unmap_data() was invoked without the same condition check, so it could run for a request for which no data had ever been mapped. This results in an incorrect pointer dereference in the kernel that can at most cause a system crash or denial of service. Red Hat rates this flaw Moderate (CVSS 4.4, CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) because triggering the vulnerable path requires local access with high privileges and the issue has no confidentiality or integrity impact; this is lower than the severity recorded in the upstream CVE record. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and 8 and the hosted OpenShift (ARO and OSD) clusters are not affected by this flaw, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 is out of support. Fixes for the affected Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 kernel and kernel-rt packages are being pursued by the Red Hat kernel engineering team as part of the delegated resolution.
