Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's USB Type-C alternate mode (altmode) driver. A local attacker could exploit a use-after-free vulnerability when the altmode device release refers to its parent without maintaining a proper reference. This could lead to a system crash, resulting in a denial of service.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
To mitigate this issue, prevent the typec kernel module from loading. This can be achieved by creating a blacklist entry for the module.
Create a file named /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-typec.conf with the following content:
blacklist typec
After creating the file, regenerate the initramfs to ensure the blacklist is applied during boot:
For systems using Dracut:
dracut -f -v
For systems using mkinitcpio:
mkinitcpio -P
A system reboot is required for the changes to take effect. Disabling this module may impact functionality related to USB Type-C alternate modes.
