Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ksmbd: Fix the missing xa_store error check

xa_store() can fail, it return xa_err(-EINVAL) if the entry cannot be stored in an XArray, or xa_err(-ENOMEM) if memory allocation failed, so check error for xa_store() to fix it.

Statement

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel ksmbd SMB server where the return value of xa_store() in the session management code (fs/smb/server/mgmt/user_session.c) was not checked. If xa_store() fails, either because the entry cannot be stored in the XArray (xa_err(-EINVAL)) or because memory allocation failed (xa_err(-ENOMEM)), the code continues as though the entry had been stored successfully, leaving session management structures in an inconsistent state. The impact on Red Hat products is Low, with a Red Hat CVSS score of 5.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), reflecting a local attack vector that requires privileges and affects availability only; this is lower than the CVE.org record, which assigns a score of 7.5 with a network attack vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H). Within the Red Hat product portfolio, only the Fedora kernel is affected, and a fix is being pursued through the Fedora community kernel maintainers. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, 8, and 9 kernels (both kernel and kernel-rt) are marked not affected by this flaw.
