Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) subsystem. Due to improper chunk size validation when handling out-of-the-blue packets in the sctp_sf_ootb() function, the kernel can read uninitialized memory. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending specially crafted SCTP packets, causing a kernel crash and resulting in a denial of service (DoS).
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
To mitigate this issue, prevent the sctp kernel module from being loaded:
- Create a configuration file to disable autoloading:
echo "install sctp /bin/true" > /etc/modprobe.d/sctp.conf
- If the sctp module is not currently in use, unload it from memory:
modprobe -r sctp
Alternatively, reboot the system to ensure the module is completely unloaded.
Warning: If the module is actively in use, unloading it may fail or disrupt network connections, and a system reboot will be required for changes to take effect.
Caveat: Disabling the SCTP module will prevent any network services or applications that rely on the SCTP protocol from establishing connections.
