Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's AMD GPU driver. A failure to properly handle error returns during ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) object evaluation can result in a NULL pointer dereference when specific interface features are unsupported. A local user could exploit this flaw to crash the system, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS).

CVSS score applicability

The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Blacklist or disable autoloading of the amdgpu kernel module on systems where AMD graphics hardware is not required.

  1. Prevent the module from loading by adding a configuration file in /etc/modprobe.d/:

echo 'install amdgpu /bin/true' > /etc/modprobe.d/disable-amdgpu.conf

  1. If the module is currently loaded, attempt to remove it:

modprobe -r amdgpu

Caveats: If the driver is actively bound to hardware or used by a display manager, dynamic unloading will not succeed and a system restart is required. Disabling the driver prevents hardware-accelerated rendering and multi-display outputs on systems relying on AMD Radeon adapters.
