Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's mlx5 InfiniBand driver. This flaw allows a local user to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by triggering a system crash. A race condition between device deregistration and background event handling can cause tasks to execute after the hardware device has been unregistered, resulting in a null-pointer dereference and kernel panic.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Prevent the mlx5_ib kernel module from loading if Mellanox RDMA or InfiniBand capabilities are not required:
- Blacklist the module by executing:
echo "install mlx5_ib /bin/true" > /etc/modprobe.d/disable-mlx5_ib.conf
- If the module is already loaded, unload it:
modprobe -r mlx5_ib
Caveat: Disabling mlx5_ib disables InfiniBand and RoCE network capabilities on Mellanox adapters. If the driver is actively running, unloading it may disrupt active RDMA traffic, and a system restart will be required if the module is in use and cannot be unloaded.
