Description
A user-after-free vulnerability was found in the linux kernel. sock_init_data() attaches the allocated sk object to the provided sock object. If ieee802154_create() fails later, the allocated sk object is freed, but the dangling pointer remains in the provided sock object, leading to a crash and loss of availability of the system.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact by Red Hat because exploitation is restricted to local attackers with privileges to create network sockets and primarily results in a system denial of service. The IEEE 802.15.4 wireless protocol stack is uncommon in standard enterprise server deployments, limiting exposure in typical production environments. Additionally, triggering the issue requires hitting specific failure conditions during socket initialization, reducing the likelihood of widespread exploitation.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
