Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's PowerPC Input-Output Memory Management Unit (IOMMU) subsystem. When running on virtual partitions where the hypervisor allocates memory-mapped input/output (MMIO) windows intersecting with dynamic direct memory access (DMA) ranges, the kernel incorrectly calculates and marks reserved memory pages. This flaw can be triggered during device initialization or system startup, causing an invalid memory access that results in a kernel crash and a Denial of Service (DoS).
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Low severity because exploitation requires a specific IBM Power hardware and hypervisor environment, and cannot be triggered by unprivileged remote or local users. The issue is restricted to pSeries logical partitions where the hypervisor establishes intersecting memory-mapped I/O and dynamic DMA address ranges. Because the fault only occurs during boot-time PCI device initialization under these specialized configurations, the impact is confined to a denial of service during system startup.
