Description
A flaw was found in the ld linker utility of GNU Binutils. A specially-crafted payload may be able to trigger a memory leak, which can lead to an application crash or other undefined behavior.
Statement
Low impact: A flaw in GNU Binutils' ld linker affects Red Hat products that ship the affected binutils-related components, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, OpenShift Container Platform, Hosted OpenShift, Ansible Services, and Red Hat Developer Toolset. All 103 current affects are marked AFFECTED. A remote attacker may cause a victim to process a specially crafted linker input; with high attack complexity and required user interaction, this can trigger a memory leak and potentially crash ld or cause undefined behavior. Red Hat's CVSS 3.1 assessment is 3.1 (LOW; AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L), indicating no confidentiality or integrity impact and limited availability impact. This matches the upstream CVSS 3.1 severity; the upstream CVSS 4.0 score of 2.3 is lower because it uses a different user-interaction metric. Remediation is deferred for the affected RHEL, OpenShift, Hosted OpenShift, and Ansible Services streams because upstream did not include the leak fixes in its stable line due to concern about destabilizing ld; the residual risk is the low-probability possibility of resource exhaustion, a crash, or undefined behavior when processing crafted input. Red Hat Developer Toolset is marked delegated-affected, and a fix is being pursued.
