Description
A flaw was found in PHP. The MySQL Native Driver (mysqlnd) wire protocol parser fails to verify that an incoming packet contains enough bytes before reading its fields. A malicious or compromised database server can send a truncated packet, causing the client application to read past the buffer boundary. This issue can lead to a process crash, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS), or potentially leak sensitive memory.
Statement
This issue is rated Low for Red Hat customers because exploitation requires a PHP application using mysqlnd to communicate with a malicious or compromised MySQL server, and the practical impact is an out-of-bounds read that primarily crashes the client process. Confidentiality and integrity impact are not established for Red Hat product use. Applications that connect only to trusted database servers are not practically exposed.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Restrict PHP applications to trusted MySQL/MariaDB servers and isolate database networks. Prefer authenticated, TLS-protected database connections and avoid exposing database endpoints to untrusted networks.
