Statement
A vulnerability was found in the OpenJDK 2D graphics component where the Graphics.copyArea operation with extreme values can trigger a heap corruption scenario. This difficult-to-exploit flaw allows an unauthenticated attacker with network access to compromise a vulnerable Java runtime, which can result in unauthorized read, update, insert, or delete access to some accessible data as well as a partial denial of service. This vulnerability applies to Java deployments, typically in clients, that load and run untrusted code (for example, sandboxed Java Web Start applications or applets) and rely on the Java sandbox for security; it does not apply to Java deployments, typically in servers, that load and run only trusted code installed by an administrator. Within Red Hat's affected scope, the java-1.8.0-openjdk, java-11-openjdk, java-17-openjdk, and java-21-openjdk packages in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 through 10, the IBM and Semeru JDK builds, Red Hat Build of OpenJDK (including the portable and Windows variants), Red Hat In-Vehicle OS, and Red Hat Insights are affected; the legacy java-1.6.0-openjdk and java-1.7.0-openjdk components in out-of-support RHEL streams are marked out of support and no updates are planned for them. Red Hat rated this flaw Moderate impact with a CVSS 3.1 score of 5.6 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L), matching the upstream Oracle severity assessment.
