Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's LZO compression module. The compression code failed to check for output buffer overruns, assuming the caller provided adequate buffer space. A local attacker with low privileges could exploit this vulnerability to trigger a buffer overrun, potentially leading to a denial of service (DoS) or other system instability.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because exploitation is constrained to authenticated local users who can supply input to kernel routines utilizing LZO compression. Under default system configurations, direct interaction with internal compression interfaces is limited, making arbitrary memory corruption difficult to achieve reliably. Although a successful exploit could result in system crashes or memory corruption, it cannot be triggered remotely without existing local access or an exposed service that forwards crafted payloads to the compression algorithm.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
