Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

smb: client: fix potential cfid UAF in smb2_query_info_compound

When smb2_query_info_compound() retries, a previously allocated cfid may have been freed in the first attempt. Because cfid wasn't reset on replay, later cleanup could act on a stale pointer, leading to a potential use-after-free.

Reinitialize cfid to NULL under the replay label.

Example trace (trimmed):

refcount_t: underflow; use-after-free. Statement

This vulnerability is rated as having Moderate impact for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because successful exploitation requires an established CIFS/SMB mount and specific connection retry or replay sequences, constraining the exposure to environments utilizing network file sharing. Red Hat Enterprise Linux does not configure or mount remote SMB shares by default, meaning typical installations remain unexposed unless CIFS mounts are explicitly initiated. When an active session encounters compound query retries, stale compound directory identifier references can lead to kernel memory corruption or a denial of service.
