Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's rtw88 and rtw8822b WiFi drivers. A local user can trigger a kernel warning by invoking the rtw8822b_set_antenna() function when the WiFi chip is powered off. This improper state handling leads to the driver attempting to read radio frequency (RF) registers, resulting in unexpected values and system instability. This could potentially lead to a denial of service.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact because exploitation requires local access and specifically depends on systems equipped with Realtek wireless chipsets, limiting the attack surface. In typical Red Hat Enterprise Linux server environments, wireless networking devices are uncommon and not active by default. Successful exploitation requires an attacker to interact with the device state while the hardware is powered down, resulting in kernel warnings and potential denial of service without compromising confidentiality or integrity.
