Description
A flaw was found in ghostscript. This vulnerability allows a remote attacker to trigger an application crash leading to a Denial of Service (DoS) or potentially execute arbitrary code by tricking a user or service into processing a specially crafted file. The issue stems from a stack-based buffer overflow in the pdfwrite component during Type 1 font processing.
Statement
Red Hat rates this vulnerability as Important rather than Moderate because successful exploitation of the stack-based buffer overflow can allow arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the running process, rather than causing only an application denial of service. Ghostscript is widely utilized across Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems in print services, desktop document viewers, and automated file conversion pipelines. To exploit the flaw, an attacker must trick a user or automated service into processing a specially crafted file containing malformed Type 1 font data using the pdfwrite output device.
