Description
A flaw was found in Apache Commons BCEL. The Class2HTML component does not properly sanitize strings when generating web pages from Java class files. A remote attacker can supply a specially crafted class file to trigger stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) when a user views the generated report. Successful exploitation may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary script code within the context of the victim's browser session.
Statement
This vulnerability is assessed as Moderate severity because successful exploitation requires an application to process untrusted Java bytecode with Class2HTML and subsequent user interaction to view the resulting reports in a browser. In supported Red Hat environments, Apache Commons BCEL is packaged and utilized primarily for bytecode manipulation and analysis during development and internal processing rather than for producing public web reports. Because the Class2HTML utility is not invoked in default product deployments or service workflows, typical installations are not exposed to this cross-site scripting flaw.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
