Description

A flaw was found in lz4-java. This issue can lead to a Denial of Service (DoS) when the LZ4 input stream is configured not to stop upon encountering empty blocks. In this non-default configuration, consecutive empty blocks are processed via recursive calls rather than iterative handling. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by supplying a crafted compressed stream containing a long sequence of empty blocks, exhausting the thread's memory stack and causing the application to crash.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated with a Low severity impact on Red Hat products because triggering the condition depends on non-default stream configuration parameters and the resulting impact is confined to a denial of service via thread stack exhaustion. Standard deployments utilize default decoding options that halt upon encountering zero-length blocks, inherently preventing recursive processing of malicious inputs. Furthermore, even when improperly configured, processing malformed streams causes a localized thread crash without leading to privilege escalation, arbitrary code execution, or memory corruption.

CVSS score applicability

The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
