Description
A flaw was found in assimp. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by providing a specially crafted Polygon File Format (PLY) file, triggering an out-of-bounds read in the buffer parsing mechanism. This issue can cause an application crash, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS), or potentially expose sensitive memory data.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact because successful exploitation requires a user or application to process a maliciously crafted 3D model, limiting the primary consequence to an application crash without enabling unauthorized code execution or system compromise. Within Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Assimp code is bundled within Qt 3D rendering libraries rather than running as an exposed network service. Risk is therefore constrained to scenarios where local applications ingest untrusted PLY assets directly from external sources.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
