Description

A flaw was found in Text::CSV_XS. This vulnerability can lead to a Denial of Service (DoS) or memory corruption when processing specially crafted input. When whitespace stripping is enabled, parsing an unquoted field containing only blank spaces can cause the parser to read and overwrite memory located before the start of the allocated buffer. An attacker who supplies malicious input can exploit this behavior to crash the application or corrupt adjacent memory.

Statement

Red Hat has rated this vulnerability as Moderate severity because exploitation requires an application to parse untrusted input using specific non-default configuration options, primarily resulting in process crash and denial of service. The issue manifests when parsing malformed records containing blank fields while whitespace trimming is enabled alongside non-standard escape or line terminator settings. In standard Red Hat deployments, Text::CSV_XS executes within user-space Perl processes, restricting the blast radius to the termination of the parsing application.

CVSS score applicability

The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
