Description

A flaw was found in FreeRDP. A malicious Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) server can exploit this issue by sending a specially crafted Remote Applications Integrated Locally (RAIL) window title update that lacks proper null termination. When the Windows client processes the update, it reads past the allocated memory buffer, potentially leading to a Denial of Service (DoS) by crashing the client application or causing limited information disclosure.

Statement

A moderate out-of-bounds read vulnerability was found in FreeRDP, which is shipped as the freerdp component in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat In-Vehicle OS, and Fedora/EPEL. A malicious or compromised Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) server can send a specially crafted Remote Applications Integrated Locally (RAIL) window title update whose full-length UTF-16 title lacks NUL termination. The FreeRDP Windows RAIL client stores the exact-length buffer and passes its raw pointer to SetWindowTextW, an API that expects a NUL-terminated string, causing the client to read past the allocated heap buffer. The demonstrated consequences are a corrupted or failed RAIL window title update and a crash of the client application (denial of service); depending on heap layout, adjacent heap contents may also be partially disclosed through the window title. Exploitation requires an established RAIL/RemoteApp session with a malicious server and does not provide code execution. Red Hat rates this flaw Moderate (CVSS 3.1 score 4.8), consistent with the upstream severity. The fix is currently deferred for the affected Red Hat product streams, so updated packages are not presently planned; the residual risk is limited to client-side denial of service or minor information disclosure when a user connects to an untrusted RDP server.
