Description
A flaw was found in Pillow. This flaw can lead to information disclosure when handling compressed Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) images. During incomplete decoding of image data, uninitialized buffer memory is not cleared before being converted into pixel rows. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by submitting a crafted TIFF image to an application that decodes and returns or re-encodes the image, allowing them to view stale contents from heap memory.
Statement
Red Hat rates this vulnerability as Important because an unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit default image parsing workflows to extract sensitive process memory without requiring privileges or triggering application crashes. In Red Hat environments such as Red Hat OpenShift AI and Ansible Automation Platform, backend services that ingest user-provided images and return rendered thumbnails, previews, or re-encoded files inadvertently disclose previously freed heap data from concurrent or prior operations. The vulnerability requires processing compressed TIFF files where the decoder handles truncated image streams, meaning services that reject this format or never expose generated image outputs are not impacted.

Mitigation
--- CME Mitigation Guidance (2026-10-20) --- Disclaimer: The following mitigation solutions are provided as a courtesy, pending the application of an official patch. This content was generated utilizing AI tools in conjunction with data from https://cmetaxonomy.org. Customers are advised to independently evaluate and test these temporary mitigations within their own infrastructure.

Until patched, this is a concern on Applications decoding user-supplied TIFF images with Pillow and returning, previewing, or re-encoding pixel data, so Restrict or block untrusted TIFF image submissions to applications that decode and return, preview, or re-encode pixel data. These controls limit blast radius and contain exploitation, but they do not fix the underlying uninitialized heap buffer defect — apply the upstream patch to fully remediate.
