Description
A flaw was found in adm-zip. This vulnerability allows an attacker to achieve privilege escalation when an archive is extracted with the option to preserve original permissions enabled. By providing a specially crafted ZIP archive containing elevated permission attributes, unmasked execution flags are applied to the extracted files. If the extraction is performed by an administrative or privileged account, an attacker can subsequently run these files to gain unauthorized elevated access.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because exploitation requires non-default settings alongside privileged execution, limiting the blast radius in standard production environments. The flaw can only be triggered if an application specifically enables preservation of original file permissions and unpacks an untrusted archive under an administrative context such as root. In typical Red Hat deployments, containerized workloads and services execute with restricted user privileges, preventing untrusted binaries from acquiring setuid or elevated rights.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Update bundled adm-zip to ≥ 0.6.1; avoid enabling keepOriginalPermission; or perform extractions as an unprivileged user.
