Description

A flaw was found in rapidjson. A remote attacker can exploit an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the regular expression (regex) parser by providing specially crafted input. This issue primarily leads to a Denial of Service (DoS) by causing the application to crash, and may also result in the disclosure of sensitive memory contents.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as an Important impact because unauthenticated remote attackers can trigger an out-of-bounds read leading to an application crash and denial of service without requiring user interaction. RapidJSON is widely consumed as an embedded JSON parsing library across server-side components, database engines, and runtime environments. When applications process untrusted network input using the affected regular expression parser, the defect can terminate critical services, directly threatening service availability.

CVSS score applicability

The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

--- CME Mitigation Guidance (2026-11-02) --- Disclaimer: The following mitigation solutions are provided as a courtesy, pending the application of an official patch. This content was generated utilizing AI tools in conjunction with data from https://cmetaxonomy.org. Customers are advised to independently evaluate and test these temporary mitigations within their own infrastructure.

The highest-value action is to reject truncated or malformed multi-byte UTF-8 sequences before passing regular expressions or JSON Schemas to the RapidJSON regex parser: upgrade to the corresponding fixed Red Hat builds, which apply the documented input check, closing all 2 injection vectors (crafted regular expression with truncated multi-byte UTF-8 sequence, crafted JSON Schema pattern with incomplete UTF-8 byte sequence). Until patched, this is a concern on Applications parsing or validating untrusted regular expressions or JSON Schemas with RapidJSON, so Prevent untrusted network or unauthenticated user input from reaching the RapidJSON regex engine or JSON Schema validation routines. These controls limit blast radius and contain exploitation, but they do not fix the underlying out-of-bounds read defect — apply the upstream patch to fully remediate.
