Description

A flaw was found in libdwarf. When parsing debug address tables, the library fails to properly account for starting offsets when verifying section length boundaries. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by tricking a user or automated system into parsing a specially crafted object file, causing an out-of-bounds read past the allocated buffer. This flaw could lead to a Denial of Service (DoS) via an application crash or the unauthorized disclosure of adjacent memory contents.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because successful exploitation requires local user interaction to open or analyze a maliciously crafted object file. In typical Red Hat deployments, libdwarf is utilized by local debugging tools and analysis utilities rather than persistent network services. Consequently, the blast radius is restricted to the execution context of the invoking command-line utility, causing an unprivileged process crash or limited heap memory disclosure without allowing arbitrary code execution or data modification.

CVSS score applicability

The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
