Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel. A local user can trigger a denial of service by querying a nexthop object with a large number of nexthop groups. This occurs because the kernel uses a fixed-size buffer that cannot accommodate the large response, leading to a kernel warning and potential system instability.
Statement
This Moderate flaw in the Linux kernel's IPv4 nexthop handling could allow a local attacker to cause a denial of service. By querying a nexthop object with an excessively large number of groups, the kernel's fixed-size buffer can be overflowed, leading to a kernel warning and potential system instability. While direct reproduction via standard tools like iproute2 is limited, a malicious local user could craft specific requests to trigger this condition.
