Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Berkeley Packet Filter (BPF) component. A local attacker could exploit this vulnerability by providing an excessively large BPF program signature. This could force the kernel into expensive memory allocation paths, potentially leading to resource exhaustion and a Denial of Service (DoS) on the system.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Low severity because exploitation is restricted to authenticated local users, requiring interaction with BPF program verification interfaces and resulting only in system resource contention rather than privilege escalation or persistent denial of service. On standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux deployments, unprivileged access to the eBPF subsystem is blocked by default, substantially mitigating the attack surface against unprivileged local accounts. Furthermore, the affected BPF program signing functionality was introduced in newer upstream kernels and is not present in enterprise distributions prior to recent development releases.
