Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's EROFS (Enhanced Read-Only File System) component. A local user could provide a specially crafted EROFS image that triggers an unsigned underflow in the z_erofs_lz4_handle_overlap() function during LZ4 inplace decompression. This vulnerability allows the system to read past the decompressed_pages array, which can lead to memory corruption.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity for Red Hat enterprise products because exploitation requires mounting a crafted storage volume, an operation that normally demands elevated privileges or direct physical device access. Successful exploitation can result in kernel memory corruption and a denial of service through a system crash when decompressing malformed filesystem extents. Earlier enterprise releases, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and 9, do not include the susceptible decompression logic.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
