Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) aloop driver. This Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability occurs when loopback_check_format() stops the capture side during a format change, while a concurrent close operation detaches or frees the runtime. An attacker could potentially exploit this to cause a system crash or achieve arbitrary code execution.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact because successful exploitation requires local user access and winning a tight race condition during stream teardown, limiting practical reliability. The snd-aloop kernel module is not loaded by default in standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux deployments, requiring deliberate configuration or application demand to be present. In environments where the loopback driver is active, an unprivileged local attacker could trigger a use-after-free condition to cause a denial of service (system crash) or potentially execute arbitrary code.

CVSS score applicability

The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
