Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's NVMe over TCP (nvmet) target subsystem. A recursive locking issue can occur when nvmet_tcp_release_queue_work() attempts to flush ctrl->async_event_work on the same workqueue (nvmet-wq) that is already processing a task. This can lead to a deadlock, causing a Denial of Service (DoS) condition for the system.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because it requires the system to be explicitly configured as an NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) target and results only in a denial of service. The affected kernel modules are not loaded by default on standard deployments, restricting the attack surface to hosts actively serving NVMe storage over the network. In affected configurations, controller teardown operations can trigger recursive workqueue handling that results in a kernel deadlock, hanging the subsystem without compromising data confidentiality or integrity.

CVSS score applicability

The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
