Description
A flaw was found in the videobuf2 subsystem of the Linux kernel. The vb2_dma_sg_mmap function did not correctly set Virtual Memory Area (VMA) flags, specifically VM_DONTEXPAND and VM_DONTDUMP. This oversight could lead to a kernel warning and system crash when mapping an imported Direct Memory Access (DMA) buffer, resulting in a denial of service.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated Moderate in severity because it requires a local attacker with system access to initiate memory mappings on specific video buffer objects, limiting the attack vector to local denial of service without compromising confidentiality or integrity. On standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux deployments, media capture hardware and associated scatter-gather streaming pipelines are rarely configured or active. Even in environments with active video capture pipelines, exploitation is limited to triggering a kernel warning or system crash rather than arbitrary code execution.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
