Description
A flaw was found in nvidia-driver. A local user can exploit an issue in the kernel mode layer that causes uninitialized kernel memory to be copied back into user space. Successful exploitation allows an attacker to read sensitive data from the operating system kernel, resulting in information disclosure.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because exploitation requires local access and is limited to confidentiality exposure without granting code execution or system crash capabilities. In Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments, exposure is restricted to systems equipped with NVIDIA GPUs where the proprietary driver kernel module is actively loaded. An authenticated local user could potentially read residual kernel memory contents, but cannot modify system state or impact overall availability.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
To mitigate this vulnerability on systems where NVIDIA GPU acceleration is not required, prevent the driver module from loading by configuring modprobe rules:
echo "blacklist nvidia" >> /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-blacklist.conf
echo "install nvidia /bin/true" >> /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-blacklist.conf
If the module is currently loaded, unload it or restart the host:
modprobe -r nvidia
Warning: Disabling or unloading the NVIDIA driver will disable GPU hardware acceleration, display outputs managed by the card, and compute workloads. A system restart is required for changes to take full effect if the driver cannot be unloaded while in use.
