Description

A flaw was found in the NVIDIA GPU Display Driver. Missing authorization checks in the kernel mode driver allow a local user to access the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) channel state of another process. A local attacker can exploit this vulnerability to access sensitive process data, resulting in information disclosure.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as having Moderate impact because exploitation requires local authenticated access and only affects confidentiality without compromising system integrity or service availability. On Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems running proprietary NVIDIA GPU drivers, an unprivileged local user could inspect GPU channel state information associated with other processes. Because remote exploitation is not possible and the flaw does not facilitate direct privilege escalation or denial of service, the risk is contained to local information disclosure between workloads.

CVSS score applicability

The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Prevent the NVIDIA kernel driver from loading by configuring a blacklist rule if GPU acceleration is not required on the system.

  1. Blacklist the module:

echo "blacklist nvidia" > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidia.conf

echo "install nvidia /bin/true" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidia.conf

  1. Attempt to unload the module if currently active:

modprobe -r nvidia

Caveats: Blacklisting the NVIDIA kernel module disables GPU hardware acceleration, graphical display output on NVIDIA hardware, and compute workloads such as CUDA.

Warning: A system reboot is required if the driver is currently in use by active processes and cannot be unloaded dynamically.
