Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's performance monitoring unit (perf/amd/ibs). An issue exists where calling perf_allow_kernel() from a Non-Maskable Interrupt (NMI) handler is unsafe. This could lead to a system crash, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS) for the affected system.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because exploitation requires local access to initiate performance monitoring events, is limited to AMD hardware architectures supporting Instruction-Based Sampling (IBS), and results strictly in a denial of service. A local authenticated process capable of invoking IBS profiling can trigger an unsafe execution sequence during non-maskable interrupt handling, leading to a kernel crash. Confidentiality and system integrity are not impacted, and environments running on non-AMD platforms or without IBS profiling in use are unaffected.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
