Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) subsystem. A Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability exists where a driver, during its probing process, accesses a memory region after it has been freed. This improper handling of memory can lead to system instability, memory corruption, or potentially allow a local attacker to escalate their privileges.
Statement
Red Hat rates this vulnerability as having a Moderate severity impact because triggering the race condition requires local system access and specific concurrency conditions during hardware device discovery or manual driver override configuration. In standard deployment scenarios, modifying PCI driver bindings is restricted to privileged administrators, significantly limiting an unprivileged attacker's opportunity to induce the use-after-free condition. While a successful exploit could disrupt system availability by crashing the kernel, arbitrary code execution remains difficult due to the tight race window.
