Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's memory management. A local user can trigger an issue where an incorrectly initialized page counter during memory unmapping operations leads to corruption of internal memory structures. This can cause the kernel to crash, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS) for the system.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having an Important impact because an authenticated local attacker can trigger kernel memory reference counter corruption, leading to system crashes or potential compromise of system integrity. Although exploitation requires local access and a precise sequence of memory-management operations during page reclaim, the resulting blast radius directly threatens overall host availability. Most enterprise platforms, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and 9, do not incorporate the affected folio batching mechanism and are therefore unaffected.
