Description

A flaw was found in the net/shaper component of the Linux kernel. A race condition exists in how VALID marks are handled for entries in an XArray. This can lead to a Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability, where memory is incorrectly freed while still in use, potentially allowing an attacker to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because exploitation requires local access with network configuration capabilities, and successful exploitation depends on winning a complex race condition. Under specific timing windows during network shaper updates, an uncoordinated table modification can trigger kernel memory corruption leading to a system crash. The affected traffic shaping framework is relatively new and not utilized in typical default deployment profiles, restricting the scope of affected enterprise environments.

CVSS score applicability

The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
