Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's netfs component. This vulnerability stems from missing memory barriers when the stream->subrequests list is accessed without locks. Specifically, functions that process read and write results, such as netfs_collect_read_results() and netfs_collect_write_results(), access subrequest flags without proper synchronization. This can lead to race conditions, potentially causing data inconsistency or system instability due to an incorrect perception of subrequest states.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as a Moderate impact for Red Hat because triggering the synchronization race requires a local user with access to mount or perform asynchronous I/O on supported network filesystems, limiting the blast radius to a system crash or denial of service. The lack of memory ordering barriers during lockless list traversals in the kernel network filesystem layer can cause concurrent operations to observe inconsistent state, potentially leading to kernel panics. Earlier platform releases, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and 9, do not include the affected streaming implementation and remain unaffected.

CVSS score applicability
